2003 grantee John Jasperse is a NYC-based dancer and choreographer. He received his FCA grant at age 40. Jasperse’s grant came at a time when it was crucial that his company find a new home—they had just received a sudden eviction notice and FCA funds helped him purchase a new studio space. The remainder was used to create a new evening-length work Prone, which premiered at The Kitchen in 2005 before touring to venues in Austria, Croatia, Germany and Ireland.
Since receiving his FCA grant, Jasperse has received numerous grants and fellowships from other organizations including MAP Fund, The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, National Performance Network and New York Foundation for the Arts. He has continued to add to his repertoire of dances with new work premiering annually. His work has been presented at venues such as The Joyce Theater, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, the Walker Art Center and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, among many others at home and abroad. In 2008, Jasperse and choreographer Jonah Bokaer founded the Center for Performance Research, a 4,000 square foot arts facility in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Jasperse was commissioned by the Brooklyn Academy of Music to develop a new evening-length work, Canyon, which will be performed as part of BAM’s 2011 Next Wave Festival. This is his second BAM commission in four years.
